Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica (Hardcover)
by Joel McIver (Author), Thomas Gabriel Fischer (Foreword) "If the Metallica story is to begin anywhere, it
might as well begin in a jazz club in Rome, where, on a May night in..."
Hardcover: 366 pages
Publisher: Omnibus Press (May 2004)
Book Description
For over two decades Metallica has been testing the boundaries of speed, heaviness, and volume with their music, selling over 85 million albums in the process and becoming one of the biggest musical acts in American history. Their early years were a blur of drunken club dates and endless tours. Later they became one of the world’s most respected extreme metal acts despite the death of their bass player Cliff Burton. They have engaged in a legal tussle with Napster, and have gone through rehab and therapy to emerge from the other side a new and wiser band. As well as telling Metallica’s story with a level of detail and eyewitness veracity which has never been attempted before, Joel McIver has exposed the biggest myths about the band and told the simple truth about how they originated and what the real facts are. He has interviewed over 75 prominent musicians, producers, writers, band associates and Metallica family members to get to the truth behind what really happened in the world of Hetfield, Ulrich, and company.

One member of the editorial team at Record Collector magazine, his work extends from the first biographies of Slipknot (published by Omnibus Press), Ice Cube, and Erykah Badu as well as articles for various magazines to liner notes for classic albums. Metallica and Philosophy: A Crash Course in Brain Surgery
(The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series) (Paperback) April 6, 2007 272 pages
by William Irwin (Editor)
Publisher: Blackwell Publishing Limited (April 6, 2007)
Book Description
Hit the lights and jump in the fire, you 're about to enter the School of Rock! Today 's
lecture will be a crash course in brain surgery. This hard and fast lesson is taught by
instructors who graduated from the old school -they actually paid $5.98 for The $5.98 EP.
But back before these philosophy professors cut their hair, they were lieutenants in the
Metal Militia.Metallica is the "thinking man 's " metal band and the headbanger 's CNN.
Snobs and music critics have often dismissed Metallica as mindless noise; we 're here to
set the record straight. "In pursuit of truth no matter where it lies, " this book considers
questions that philosophers have been pondering for ages, including: Does Metallica 's music
provide an Aristotelian catharsis or does it just make kids go postal? Can "Fade to Black "
save you from suicide? Are we all in the "Sanitarium "? How can we "Escape " to be free? What
can Nietzsche tell us about the God That Failed? What can Descartes and "One " tell us about
the relationship between the mind and the body? Did Lars make a sound argument against Napster?
Metallica is more than just a band, and this book is much more than just a ticket to ride down
memory lane. This is an in-depth analysis of the soundtrack to your life. So start your CD
player, fire up your iPod, or, better yet, break out the old vinyl. We 're going ' for a ride
with the four horsemen, and a few philosophers too.

performance in Copenhagen, Denmark..."
Paperback: 175 pages
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing (August 1, 1993)
Spanning Metallica's entire history up until 1993; this slickly put together unofficial biography is an absolute must have for Metallica fans young and old. Full of facts (both widely known and others not known at all) and unpublished pictures of the band from their garage days to their glory days, the only thing that K.J. Doughton's book lacks is in terms of depth about Cliff Burton's untimely death and more of what Jason Newsted went through in joining the band. All that aside however, out of all the "unauthorized" and "unofficial" biographies of Metallica that have been out there for years, this is undoubtadly the most well put together one, and is surely the best.
Metallica: Nothing Else Matters: The Stories Behind the Biggest Songs (Paperback)
by Chris Ingham (Author)
Paperback: 144 pages
Publisher: Thunder's Mouth Press (October 2, 2003)
Book Description
Metallica has become the world’s biggest heavymetal band. Alongside such iconic artists as Iron Maiden, AC/DC, and Ozzy, Metallica has come to define the modern view of metal music. Now in their third decade, the band remains as big, brutal, energetic, and unashamedly loud. Reaching their commercial peak in 1991, the band’s fifth record, the self-titled Metallica (dubbed the Black Album by fans) has sold in excess of 12 million records in the United States alone and continually sells year in, year out, regardless of musical trends. Nothing Else Matters charts the recorded highlights of Metallica, both as a powerful live unit and as an influence on an entire generation of young metal bands and artists. The text includes insights on the development of James Hetfield as a songwriter, the nonmusical roles that each member plays, and the contribution of original bassist Cliff Burton who played "big brother" to the younger members. It also includes 90 photographs and anecdotes from the studio sessions; insights into the lyrics; cover art and developing musical direction, particularly from the hugely controversial
Load/Reload eras.

Metallica: The Frayed Ends of Metal (Paperback)
by Chris Crocker (Author) "Heavy metal was born the first day a guitar was used not as a
musical instrument, but as a deadly weapon..."
Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin; 1st ed edition (December 15, 1992)
From Library Journal
Ever since the late 1960s, when Steppenwolf sang of "heavy metal thunder" and Led Zeppelin's bowdlerized and amplified version of the blues reached the top of the album charts, metal music has bubbled under the surface of mass popular success. After thoroughly absorbing the sounds of traditional metal bands, Metallica added the rough edge of punk music to the mix and created a sound that eventually forced the staid old fogies of the Grammy Awards to establish a new category for hard rock/metal performance. Metallica's rise was unaided by hit records or record company hype, and they even bypassed Music Television until they were established as the premier headbanger
band. This is a refreshing story of hard work, determination, and talent succeeding on its own terms. Most libraries will not have material on this subject in book form. Recommended. - Dan Bogey, Clearfield Cty. P.L. Federation, Curwensville, Pa. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. Review "They'll be the new kings of rock. Metallica: This Monster Lives: The Inside Story of Some Kind of Monster (Paperback)
by Joe Berlinger (Author), Greg Milner (Author) "Like many great stories of rock-and-roll excess, this one begins in a hotel's penthouse suite..."
Paperback: 336 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin (October 20, 2005)
From Publishers Weekly
In 2001, the hugely successful hard-rock/heavy metal band Metallica got together in a converted army bunker in San Francisco to record its first collection of new songs in years. Raw from the departure of their bass player yet determined to write and record together, the rock stars began group therapy with Phil Towle, a gentle-voiced therapist (or "performance-enhancement coach"). Far from hiding this image-smashing move, however, the band allowed acclaimed documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky to film, well, whatever. Even after Metallica lead singer James Hetfield slammed the therapy and left the recording studio, the creators of the brilliant documentaries Brother's Keeper and Paradise Lost were allowed to keep filming. What emerged two years later was a rock documentary, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, that is arguably as defining a portrait of the values and conflicts of our times as Gimme Shelter is of its time. In an absorbing narrative, Berlinger (with rock journalist Milner) describes just what it took—the myriad decisions and risks—to turn nearly 1,600 hours of footage into a story that delivers an emotional impact that is all the greater for being true. This book should be required reading for aspiring filmmakers because it reveals the huge difference between turning the cameras on a contrived situation that purports to be "reality" and making a cinema verité or nonfiction film. Berlinger shows that capturing truth is both art and science, and that the best efforts require that the filmmakers risk as much as their subjects. 75 b&w photos.

Review
“Takes on the momentum of a suspense novel, and triumphs because of the commitment and fearlessness of Metallica…This Monster Lives shows that tenacious reporting can still produce great narratives, even about the most mega of megaplatinum stars.”
---New York Times
“Berlinger takes us even deeper into the inner sanctum. One of the book’s bonuses: many events that were edited for the film, including a pivotal scene in which drummer Lars Ulrich laces into singer James Hetfield, are transcribed in full.”
---USA Today
“A fascinating look at the logistics of making an album and the dysfunctional family that bands can become.”
---Chicago Tribune
“Berlinger truly puts the meta in Metallica. Loads of deleted scenes and a metal-friendly theme (everyone has a monster to slay) are riffs we can all bang our heads to.”
To Live Is To Die by Joel McIver (to be released in July 2009)
Product Description
Among non-metal fans and hard rockers alike, Metallica is undeniably a household name. But few know that their style developed much of its sophistication under the guidance of their original bassist, Cliff Burton. Born and raised in San Francisco, Burton pushed the band to new musical levels with his training, songwriting, and exceptional skills on the bass. When Cliff was killed in 1986 — the band’s tour bus overturned on a Swedish mountain road — Metallica plummeted into despair and, by their own admission, never pushed the creative envelope as radically as they had done with Burton. This biography explores Cliff’s background, talent, and influence — one acknowledged by musicians of all kinds.
